ABSTRACT

With the outbreak of Covid-19, Open and Distance Learning (ODL) has become even popular particularly among those who aim to pursue postgraduate studies. ODL provides alternative for many to study while working or while raising a family. Nevertheless, the lack of student engagement and noncompletion rate in ODL programs were reported higher than in traditional programs. One of the main factors is due to the instructor-student interaction issue. The objective of this qualitative study was to understand the issue by looking at instructor attributes and types of feedback required by the students. The data were collected via semi-structured interviews with a small sample of university postgraduate students and academics in Malaysia and were analysed using thematic analysis and data triangulation. The results show two factors that need attention to improve instructor-student interaction and make ODL a better learning option for mature learners: instructor empathy and feedback to empower learners. These findings cannot be generalised without further research but are able to provide some information on the important factors to consider in preparing instructors for learning delivery completely online. © 2022,International Journal of Emerging Technologies in Learning. ABSTRACT

This paper identify the reality of distance learning in the presence of the emerging corona pandemic "COVID 19" from the student point of view in the practice in Jordan student as case study. To achieve the aim of the study, the descriptive and analytical approach was used, whereby we prepare an electronic questionnaire that include 20 questions that were distributed electronically to a random sample of 318 students. The result of the study conclude the following: The importance of using e-learning systems in distance learning programs. Some difficulty face the student during the use of distance learning programs such as lack of resources. Student absence shows statistically significant differences at each student levels in responses of the sample student members. The results of the paper study recommend and encouraging the ministry of education in Jordan to benefit from e-learning technology to facilitate and improve educational learning practice. © 2021 IEEE.

ABSTRACT

The SARS-CoV-2 pandemic generated the need to modify the current clinical educational model with the challenge of promoting safety and the continuity of clinical education through the use of virtual platforms. Since clinical training in hospital institutions cannot be substituted, a strategic training plan was developed to guarantee protection, safety, and academic continuity for students upon returning to clinical clerkships. The objective of this project was to develop and evaluate the impact of a massive hybrid training plan as an educative strategy to give the theoretical and practical knowledge required for the safe return of undergraduate students to their respective clinical activities in the context of this pandemic. An academic program was designed through a massive hybrid strategy to train 616 undergraduate students studying clinical cycles by presential, virtual, synchronous, and asynchronous activities. To know the program's impact, a study based on an initial evaluation and a final evaluation was carried out to evaluate the acquisition of the critical knowledge and skills of the program. A significant difference was found between the means of the initial and final evaluations (p <0.001), as well as a high impact of the intervention (d 1.6). Significant improvements in the areas of COVID-19 initial management (p <0.001) and personal protective equipment use (p <0.001) were seen in the post-test when compared to the initial evaluation. Both a quantitative and a qualitative analysis were carried out, finding positive results on the course design, quality of didactic resources, and instructors' performance. Massive hybrid training is an effective strategy to facilitate the reintegration of undergraduate students into their face-to-face clinical rotations.

ABSTRACT

Background The 2019 novel coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic has impacted the globe dramatically. It has affected daily life noticeably and the teaching process is one of the significantly affected aspects as the learning approach has been shifted to distance learning (DL). These new changes may affect student performance and emotional well-being. This study aimed to assess the psychological impact of the COVID-19 pandemic and distance learning on healthcare students. Method An online self-administered cross-sectional survey was distributed to healthcare students for the period between April 2020 to June 2020. The study included students from different universities in Saudi Arabia. Knowledge and perception of COVID-19 and the experience of distance learning during the pandemic period were assessed using a 5-point Likert scale. Psychological effect was evaluated using Four-Item Patient Health Questionnaire for Anxiety and Depression (PHQ-4). Results A total of 721 students completed the survey with the majority being females. Around 25% of students had experienced anxiety, while 35% had depression. Severe anxiety and depression were noted in over 6% of the participants. Younger age and female gender were more affected psychologically. Students with higher scores in PHQ-4 were strongly disagreeing that hand gloves and surgical masks may help in preventing COVID-19 transmission. Students with normal psychological assessment were more likely to favor DL, while students with moderate to severe anxiety and depression disagreed. Conclusion Healthcare students have alarmingly high levels of anxiety and depression during the COVID-19 pandemic. General knowledge of the pandemic is not associated with the psychological impact. DL is a convenient approach for students with normal PHQ-4 scores. Programs to help students overcome the psychological impact of COVID-19 are highly recommended.
